German Market Place Haul
Two days ago, I went on a "field trip" somewhere in Bukit Timah Road. I call it a field trip because it felt like one; it required a very long train ride + walking + a bus ride. Specifically, my trip went like this: from Dhoby Ghaut (NE Line), I transferred to the red line (NS Line) going to Jurong East and alighted at Bishan. From Bishan, I transferred to the Circle Line going to Harbourfront where I alighted at Botanical Gardens station. From BG station, I rode a bus and two stops later, I finally arrived. Went through all that just to find the one shop* that sells the current obsession of everyone aside from cronuts: cookie butter. The Lotus one.
German Market Place is a cool shop. For a small shop, it does house quite a lot of German and European products like chocolates, wines, cookies, cold cuts, coffee and tea...just a lot. You really have to take your time browsing because it's your unusual grocery store. After looking around and marveling at the foreign things around me, here are the things I got.
Albert Heijn Mini Stroopwafels (S$7.95). OMG. These stroopwafels are delicious. They're not just your ordinary waffles: they are filled! Caramel filled to be exact. It's not crunchy; it's chewy which is less messier than the usual crunchy waffles. Yes, the price might shock you a little bit but trust me, your S$8 is worth it.
Albert Heijn Sinaasappel Zwarte Thee (S$2.50). Decided to try this since I love tea. I Google-d the translation of these words and apparently sinaasappel is orange and zwarte thee is black tea. So it's orange black tea. Can't wait to try this!
Wasa Delicate Thin Crisp in Rosemary & Salt (S$5.90). Goodness, these crackers are oh so good! We paired this with brie cheese and it was fantastic. One box contains 22 crisps and each crisp is quite big so it'll definitely fill you up.
Maoam (SS2.35 per pack). MAAAAAAAOOOOAAAAAAMMMMMSSSSS!!!!!! I've been searching for Maoms for so long because it's the favorite candy of my insanely gorgeous boyfriend favorite Brit Youtuber, Jack Harries aka JacksGap. You have no idea how much I've fangirled over these candies. Maoams are very similar to Fruitella but I prefer these because they're not as sweet and they're pretty tart which I really love. Each pack has 5 flavors, namely orange, strawberry, lemon, raspberry, and cola. I personally love strawberry, lemon, and raspberry.
Lotus Speculoos Original (S$9.50), Lotus Speculoos Crunchy (S$9.50), Lotus Caramelized Biscuit with Belgian Chocolate (S$4.50). The main reason why I traveled all the way to Bukit Timah. I originally grabbed 2 bottles of the crunchy cookie butter but apparently each customer can only buy 1 of each variant. I returned the other crunchy cookie butter bottle in its shelf with a heavy heart but I was told that I can get the other one instead, which was the original. So I guess that's alright. I also saw another cookie variant but this time it's topped with chocolate so yay to that! I haven't opened the cookie butter yet but I get to keep the crunchy and bring it back home to the Philippines and the original will be left in my sister's condo for my sister and her family to try.
So yeah, that's it really. All in all, I think that items that I bought are really good. I really loved everything, with the exception of the cookie butter of course since I haven't tried it yet. The trip to the German Market Place was worth it. If you're wondering how I went home, I took a bus. I had the option of walking back to Botanic Gardens station but the sun was so high up I didn't even dare. So I took a bus that took me to Dover station. From Dover, I took the train going to Pasir Ris/Changi Airport and I alighted at Outram Park. From Outram Park, I took the purple line going to Punggol and I alighted at Boon Keng station, where I took a bus home. Next time, I'll probably head to Serangoon station instead then take the Circle Line to Botanic Gardens. Yep, that's an easier route.
*Apparently, German Market Place isn't the only store that has cookie butter. Yesterday, my sister and I saw some jars of Lotus cookie butter in Candy Empire. It's not the same cookie butter in GMP though. The cookie butter in Candy Empire is made of Lotus caramelized cookies. The ones in GMP are made of speculoos or spiced shortbread cookies. Yes, people, there's a difference! If I remember correctly, I think the cookie butter in Candy Empire costs a little past S$10. So if you're not willing to travel to Bukit Timah or you're not sure how to get to GMP, you might as well drop by at Candy Empire in VivoCity for your cookie butter fix.
