Last Year's Europe Trip: Pisa
Day five.
DAY FIVE: PISA
We headed straight to Pisa after our half day tour in Florence. We were supposed to do a guided tour in Pisa but we came across a mishap in Florence, making us late to our scheduled tour and ultimately missing it. We ended up just walking around the grounds, taking photos, and checking out nearby shops. It was quite annoying that our tour was cancelled but well, it was our doing really. Oh well.
Bus ride to our destination!
The square where these three landmarks are located is called Piazza dei Miracoli or the Square of Miracles. The entire square is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The very first landmark you'll see when you enter the square is the Battistero di San Giovanni or the Pisa Baptistery of St. John. It was built in 1152 and completed in 1363. It was designed by Diotisalvi, an architect from Pisa. This is the largest baptistery in Italy and is made from marble.
This is the Duomo di Pisa or the Pisa Cathedral. This cathedral is dedicated to St. Mary of the Assumption. Its construction was spearheaded by Italian architect Buscheto in 1064. Its facade is made from gray marble and white stone and was built by Rainaldo. The cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Pisa.
The cathedral's doors are made of bronze.
The ever famous Torre pendente di Pisa or the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It is the free standing campanile of the Pisa Cathedral. Construction began in the 12th century but because of its unstable foundation, it resulted to the tower's 4 degree lean or tilt.
This was also where Italian scientist Galileo Galilei conducted his Pisa experiment.
