Shash Stash

Coppery goodness for days.

I'm currently dealing with a backlog of polishes, thanks to my habit of buying new ones and my laziness of actually using them. This year is all about using the ones I got before 2016 so expect polishes that are from old collections. This polish is definitely from an old line but it still looks and works like a charm.

Today I have Just In Case, a polish from the essence's previous line, Colour & Go. JIC is a nice metallic brown, almost copperish in color. If I compare the color to an eyeshadow, it's like a slightly lighter version of Urban Decay's Smog. What I like about it is that it isn't just one block of color; it's a brown, yes, but there's also a gold tinge and shine, and when you least expect it, a sheen of pink that makes this polish pass as rose gold. It's definitely on the warm side but it's a color that doesn't really darken your skin color. And for that, it gets bonus brownie points from me. It may look like something a mature person would wear, like it isn't really age-appropriate but you know what, it's a color anyone could rock.

As with other polishes in the C&G line, it's smooth and buildable. However, it also has a tendency to thicken up. Because of that, the risk of developing bubbles is high, specially if you apply a thick second coat. It also tends to pool at the cuticles so applying it in thin coats is definitely key. It can also be a bit streaky but a layer of top coat slightly evens the polish out. Drying time is quick when applied in thin coats although infairness to this line, drying time's not too bad even with thick coats.

I've reviewed several C&G polishes before so just check out the NOTW section of this blog. So far, this is my fave metallic polish from the line. It's like a rockstud color and it's the right polish to wear if you want something that isn't too dark or too light. I mean, it's not a typical summer hue but it's a great year round color, no?

Trying out a local top coat once again.

Thumbs up!

The freebie polish that's now one of my faves.

Honestly, I love buying magazines in Singapore. They have ones in English, in Japanese (my 14y/o self would diiiieeeee), in Chinese, and I'm pretty sure they have more in other languages. But aside from the vast selection of fashion and beauty magazines, what I love most about buying magazines in Singapore is the freebies. Not just any freebies- freebies that you can actually use and enjoy. I've had some skin care freebies, a small plastic envelope pouch which I currently use to store my passport and hard drive, a stinking cute Coach notebook, and most recently, a Missha freebie pack containing 2 new products. Today, I'm featuring the free nail polish I got.

When I got my freebies, I wasn't able to pick the shade I wanted. It was a random pick by the person manning the cashier, so in a way, it's fair game. I got BL06, a shade I thought I'd hate but ended up using more than once. BL06 is this gorgeous cool blue creme polish. I can't decide if it's like a Carolina blue or a blue-gray but it's something along those lines. I like how it looks good and bright on the nails without looking tacky or hideous, and it's perfect for the upcoming summer season here in the PH. I personally love using it on my toes because it makes my feet look decent whenever I wear sandals.

This is my first Missha polish and I have to say, I quite like it. The formula is a little on the thick side but it's totally workable. It glides smoothly on the nails and thank the heavens because it doesn't flood on the cuticles. There's a little bit of streaking but I figured that this is the type of polish that needs to be applied thickly on one go to avoid that. Two coats make it all nice and uniform and if you see a some streaking, top coat usually tames it. I think the only challenge here is the application because of the brush. The paddle brush is quite wide and rounded so it's a struggle to keep the cuticles polish-free. It can also be a challenge if your nails are quite narrow. But if you can work past that, then it's all good.

So far, I love using this polish and it made me more curious on Missha's nail polish line. Apparently, the Lucid range has a Matt(!!) line and MBR01 looks miighty fine...

Blend, baby, blend.

LOTDs are back in business, yo.

Paper colored nails.

Last year, I featured a post on how to jazz up white polish. It just recently dawned on me that I never got to publish a review on the white polish I used on that post. And now whaddayaknow, it's now this week's featured polish!

White polish is something I shy away from, just because I know how unflattering it is on my tanned skin. But you know, why the hell not. The only white polish I have in my stash is OMG White Out. It's a straight-up white polish. No shimmer, no glitter, just plain white creme polish. It's the kind of color you can use as a base for brighter hues to make them pop even more.

The thing I didn't like that much is the formula. I'm not really new to the OMG lacquer line but for some reason, White Out was a real struggle to work with. I don't know if it's just the one I have but this polish was on the thick side, totally opposite from the consistency of Exactly Red. Applying it was harder on the cuticle area as I had little control over, well, everything. It was also streaky, but in a very thick way. The second coat would somehow affect the first coat, making it more streaky and uneven. It does level out after a few minutes but not in an entirely #polishonfleek kind of way. I'm pretty sure there are other polishes that have better formulas than this one but I gotta hand it to this polish that even though it has a crappy consistency, it has remarkable color payoff. Gotta love an opaque white polish, eh?

I've been wearing this for a few days now and I have to admit: I'm starting to like white polish on my nails. I know, I know, shocker. I feel like it's such a good color for summer because it looks clean, loud, and fun. Seriously feeling some Shay Mitchell vibes right now, tbh. :)

A pretty affordable cuticle oil from a local beauty brand.

Are you ready?

Blue? Blue.

Finally got to paint my nails after weeks of gnawing my nails off! No, really, the reason why I can't put up a decent NOTW post is because I have short bitten nails that are so not photogenic. I made sure to let my nails grow a little before doing this post hence the shorter than usual nails. But let's talk about what I have on my nails now, shall we?

Here I have essence's new(?) line of polishes, The Gel. I'm not sure if this is their permanent line now but I've noticed that their old line, Colour & Go, isn't sold anymore so I guess this is. The colors in The Gel line are more basic and straightforward*, probably because they're mimicking the gel-like look and feel. I purchased a few polishes in this line and here's one of them: 31: Electiiiiic.

Electriiiiiic is a true blue polish. It's not dark, it's not light; it's your basic blue. I personally call this shade "blue ballpen blue" because it's exactly that color. It doesn't have any shimmers in it so you get to jazz it up when you feel like it. First layer of this polish has a semi-transparent look, like a legit gel polish. The second coat really brings everything out, from the opacity to the evenness of the polish.

Compared to the old line, the formula on The Gel line feels thinner but not necessarily watery. It's like a creme polish that's thinned out a tad bit. I actually found it a dream to work with because it spreads evenly on my nail sans the pooling at the cuticles. I also experienced no streaking at all. Drying time is noticeably faster than the old line (hallelujah!). The first coat dried at around 2-3 mins after application and the second coat around 5, although I make sure to let it dry up to 20 mins just to be sure. So this + a quick dry top coat? Best. Combo. Ever.

Between Colour & Go and The Gel, the latter wins in terms of formula, hands down. I do like that the Colour & Go line offers a variety of finishes though but if we''re talking plain polishes, The Gel line is a winner. Good thing I got several colors because I can't wait to wear them all on my nails. ;)

*Okay so I just visited essence's website and found out that there are new polishes out! And the good news: new finishes too! The have glitter, matte, soft matte, satin, soft metal, Basically, it's like the old line, only with improved formula. Yay!

We've all had a few bad eggs in our stash.
