My Kind of Brown: Detail Makeover Make It Pro Starter Pen in Medium Brown
Easy filler.
The last brow review I did here was back in September so I thought I'd feature another one today before November ends to 1). help out those who are in need of a new brow product; and 2). break up the back to back lippie posts. I love trying out brow products so it's always a blast when I discover ones that work really well. Brow pomades, powders, and mascaras are my favorite while I badly need to practice with pencils, hence why I keep buying a few of them (for practice, of course). So here's another brow pencil review!
Here I have the Details Makeover Make It Pro Starter Pen in Medium Brown. A little product description:
"Create beautifully-shaped brows like a PRO with our Make It PRO Starter Pen. No need to sharpen. Just twist the barrel and you're all set! This pen features a triangular tip on one end for precision and a brush spooley on the other to help groom and define the brows."
Unlike the Kris Brow Liner, this doesn't have a brow gel but instead it has a spoolie, the only thing I was looking for in the Kris Brow Liner. It's a twist-up kind of product, one that doesn't need sharpening and just like the Kris Brow Liner, the brow product itself comes in a triangular shape. Packaging-wise, the Kris Brow Liner feels sturdier but I find the Starter Pen lighter in comparison.
Shade-wise, the Starter Pen in Medium Brown is exactly the shade I'm looking for for my brows. I absolutely love a good cool-toned deep brown against my black brows because I feel like it lifts my brows up instead of making them darker than they already are. It's the perfect shade for me and one I look for in any brow product.
On the swatch photos above, you can tell that the Starter Pen is a deeper and cooler brown while the Kris Brow Liner is more of a warm neutral brown. Both shades work on my brows but the reddish tint of the Kris Brow Liner is a bit noticeable against my jet black hair.
Formula-wise, it's quite the same as the Kris Brow Liner, although I think the Starter Pen is creamier and deposits more product. This one is also very easy to brush out and blend out so blurring it out or even removing it is a breeze especially when you make a mistake or if you overfill your brows. On the brows, it feels lightweight which I like. You have no idea how many times I've forgotten I had this on my brows! I also like that this doesn't feel too waxy or too creamy. Also, the spoolie is very handy and works like a charm. Honestly, I know it's weird but the spoolie is freaking fantastic. Great size and works like a spoolie should. A+ for the spoolie!
Now for the cons: the Starter Pen loses in longevity against the Kris Brow Liner. I feel that mainly that's because the Starter Pen doesn't fully dry down and set so it's prone to fading, smudging, and easy transferring. Setting it with a powder is a good way of making sure it stays in place but on its own, well, you know how it'll go. It's also not water-proof, making it easy to get scrubbed away with water and facial wash. That could be a pro or a con, though, depending on how you see it. Definitely don't use this when you go swimming or exercising, though, cause it won't last and it'll be smudge city on your brows. Lastly, it breaks easily. I don't know if that's because it's creamy or it's a thin product but be careful if you were to use it.
Overall, it's not a bad product; it's an A-okay one. It does its job in filling the brows and it's also a pretty affordable brow pencil in the local beauty market, not to mention the color range is pretty impressive. It's a good on-the-go product but something that needs to be set or retouched throughout the day. I don't think I'd repurchase another although I wouldn't mind buying another one if I were on a pinch.
