Breakfast @ Department of Caffeine
Last May, I was obsessed with cafes in Singapore. I was always Google-searching cafes that are nearby, cozy, and affordable. While searching, I stumbled upon DOC or Department of Caffeine. So with my sister and her family, we decided to take a little trip to Duxton Road to have our Sunday breakfast outing.
If you aren't looking hard enough, it's easy to miss DOC. They don't have the biggest of signs in front of their shop so I recommend walking when you reach Duxton Road. We took a cab and we missed it so we had to walk back. :)) Anyway, once you walk, you'll see it instantly. We made a reservation days before dropping by but I think they accept walk-ins if the place isn't packed.
DOC is quite small but it's spacious enough. I love how they greet you the moment you walk in and they'll assist you immediately. I like that it's also well lit and well decorated.
Anyway, on to the food! We saw their menu online and saw that their food are reasonably priced, even cheaper than breakfast places in Orchard.
I absolutely LOVE anything sweet in the morning so I got myself DOC's Banana and Rum Buttermilk Waffles (S$15). Serving was big enough for me and I loved it so much! The waffle was tasty and not overly crispy. I love that I can taste the rum while eating the waffles because the waffles absorbed the yummy rum syrup. The bananas were done just right and OMG their ice cream was yummo! Yes, I'll have this every morning if I can. (This and Wild Honey's Sweet Morning). If you're not a big fan of banana and rum, you can get Peanut Butter and Jelly Buttermilk Waffles (S$14).
My sister opted for something savory so she got Sundried Tomato & Herb Waffles. There were two options for toppings, one was with streaky bacon, scrambled eggs, & maple bacon jam (S$18.50) and the other was with fried chicken, tangy pineapple salsa, "bulldog" mayo, sunny side egg, and gravy (S$20). Obviously, she chose the first one. I was able to try it and it was really good! I honestly won't mind having this next time. The eggs were fluffy and I love the combination of sweetness and saltiness. Even my nephew liked it! :D
My bro-in-law chose BOE (Bit of Everything) (S$20). It's quite similar to Wild Honey's European, something he orders every time we go there. Anyway, BOE has two herb & parmesan english muffins, one topped with premium Spanish serrano cured ham and onsen egg, the other muffin with dill dressed smoked salmon with citrus dressing. This received positive feedback from my bro in law so thumbs up!
For drinks, my sister and I decided to try the Mörk Specialty Hot Chocolate (S$6.50). We both had the original 70% but there's also an 85% in case you're into that. It's a nice change from the sweet hot chocolate drinks served in cafes. One thing that I didn't like was it wasn't piping hot. I love my hot drink erm...hot. And my drink wasn't. Sighhh.
The bro-in-law got a Caffe Mocha (S$5.50). Cute art!
Overall, my DOC experience was good. The food didn't take that long, the servers were attentive, and the place was quite cozy. If you're in the area, I recommend dropping by. Or maybe make a reservation. Aside from meals, they also have cakes and pastries, teas, smoothies, beers, salads, the works. It was definitely worth the trip! :)
