Part 3

(Click here for Part 1 and Part 2.)

Our next destination was Wat Mahathat, or the Temple of the Great Relic. It first started as a temple in 1374 and became Wat Mahathat when King Ramesuan expanded the area in 1384 to build a great temple. However, the Burmese army raided and looted the temple and set it on fire in 1767, leaving it in ruins. It was restored again in the 1950s.

One of the most popular features here in Wat Mahathat is the Buddha head amongst tree roots. No one really knows its true origins; some say the roots grew around the head while others say that a looter hid the head behind the roots and failed to get it back.

Again, this area is more vast than it looks but we weren't able to walk around further as we had to go to our next destination. This place was breezier even if it has such a large ground becaue it had more trees and plants around the area. Wat Mahathat is definitely worth visiting, for the sights and its history.

Next stop: Wat Phra Si Sanphet!
